The Shocking Truth about HTML5

HTML5
  • The newest version of HTML since HTML4
  • Backwards compatible: older websites still work, i.e. it does not break existing web pages
  • Works on all newish browsers

New Multimedia Elements:

  • <audio> - Have audio files play off your website and does not require plugin (such as Flash)
  • <video> - Have video files play off your website and does not require plugin (such as Flash)
  • <canvas> - Create animations similar to what Flash can do (without a plugin or SEO problems).

An Alternative to Flash
Flash is a multimedia platform used to add animation, video, and interactivity to web pages. Flash has been around for a while and although it can add interactivity to your website, it is difficult for search engines to index. Building a website entirely out of Flash is not part of a good Search Engine Optimization (SEO) strategy. Also, Flash will not work on Apple products (iPads, iPhones, iPods).

The good news is HTML5 will work in Apple products and is part of a good SEO strategy.

New Semantic Markup Elements:
These new tags enable web developers to make a more efficient and intelligent web page. There are several new tags that will help developers classify important content and help with Search Engine Optimization. These work similarly to the way you might organize an academic essay.

  • <header> - a header for a page, section or article
  • <nav> - contains navigation links
  • <section> - a section which can contain navigation, articles and asides
  • <article> - an independent block of content
  • <aside> - not strictly part of the main document, it could be used on a website sidebar
  • <footer> - a footer for a page, section or article

Compatibility
The challenge with HTML5 has been that the different browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.) all want to offer something that unique from the other browsers. Each browser company has their own team of developers with ideas on how to make the best browser. Each browser company also has their own marketing department with ideas on what consumers want. There are many other elements in HTML5 that are compatible with some browsers and not with others.

Here is a tool for testing your browser’s compatibility with HTML5. Just click on this link and you will see a score for the browser you are viewing the page in.
